My experience with Tercia Amsterdam @Pilates Plattekloof, What can I say: I was never really into exercise… and I wasn’t great at it either: usually the last to finish on the athletic track and I couldn’t do a sit up without using my neck muscles either… until I met Tercia. I tried the gym once… but the ‘big scary’ gym gave me stocky muscles and was not nearly as fun and personal as Pilates Plattekloof. Her studio is warm and inviting and never makes me, a not-so-pro athlete, feel incapable. Her studio is as inviting as she is engaged and encouraging. #Greatmotivator With Tercia I learned how to use my muscles to my advantage: I became toned, stronger and people: friends, family and strangers alike, noticed saying I look the picture of health and wellness. I think what they didn’t say (but definitely saw) was that with exercise my energy levels shot up… you can ask Tercia for a nice explanation on this. My posture also improved: I was walking tall and straight up. My back pain also decreased significantly. Tercia’s full body assessment before she started training me helped to identify muscles that needed strengthening. I should also mention that I can finally do a sit up without using my neck. I believe its because of ‘bodily awareness’: a concept I never understood until training at Pilates Plattekloof. She taught me that strengthening in the right places helps me to use the ‘correct’ muscles, this in turn avoids those aches and pains and it really helps! My decreased back pain, more than all the other benefits, has become my motivation to continue training at Pilates Plattekloof. More than all of the above: I love Tercia’s personal touch: she is a great motivator, engaged during sessions and always professional. She knows my likes, accommodates them and she is sensitive to when, and how much, she should push to do more. I would heartily recommend anyone into her knowledgeable and competent hands. I love my classes with Tercia. She understands my lower back / posture problems, has a great knowledge of anatomy and thus is able to structure classes to best suit my needs. She is an excellent instructor and is encouraging at all times. I have really felt the benefit of her input. Under her instruction and care, I am now more aware of my posture and of how to best look after my lower back. I’m a long distance runner and have battled for the past 2 years with setbacks due to frequent injuries (ITB, Piriformis Syndrome, SI joint issues). This is partly due to my biomechanics but also very much due to weak stablising muscles in my abdomen, hips, lower back and glutes. My chiro kept emphasising the need to get strong and I thought I was doing enough...but clearly not! Having been a dancer for many years I remembered the incredible benefits of Pilates and how focused it is so I thought it I had to give it a real go to support my body in running injury free. I also knew I needed to find a dancer who taught Pilates because dancers have a relationship with the body that is rivalled by few. Dancers understand movement, stability and being 100% “in the body”. They connect intimately with their bodies and understand how it moves through space. Of course I was thrilled to find out that Tercia Amsterdam was teaching Pilates around the corner from me! I’ve always respected her deeply as a dancer. Not just the beauty in her movement but how she has conditioned her own body into the perfect instrument for her art. I’ve been with her for 6 weeks now and I’m astounded at how Pilates with Tercia has begun to transform my body. She has a hawk’s eye that can spot even the slightest distortion and has an incredible way of helping you to understand how to correct it. My pain while running has reduced radically and I can feel the strength building. I am so excited to continue this journey with her. I know I have a long way to go still but if I’m seeing this kind of result after just 6 weeks I can’t even imagine the difference after 6 months. Incredibly grateful.
